Who are You?
Video installation
2024

Who Are You? is a video installation in which I projected my uncle’s face onto my own using a portrait photograph that I had taken of him. My uncle lived with schizophrenia for most of his life. Schizophrenia is often considered one of the most severe and terrifying mental illnesses because of the extreme ways it can alter a person’s perception of reality. A few years after his death, I came across a video explaining the experience of living with schizophrenia and how it can blur the boundaries between reality and illusion. Watching it was a heartbreaking moment. For the first time, I began to imagine what my uncle might have endured throughout his life. It made me think about this idea that behind every face a unique reality exists that often remain invisible to others. This work reflects on how deeply personal and sometimes unfair life experiences can be. It also explores empathy, identity, and the limits of our ability to understand another person’s inner world. This project became a turning point in my artistic practice, to focus on psychological turmoil and its influence on how we perceive, interpret, and experience reality.
